Why is chromium oxide used in glass-furnace refractories?
Because it resists molten glass corrosion better than almost any oxide available at industrial scale. Chrome-alumina refractories are standard in the throat and sidewall of fibreglass and E-glass furnaces, where an ordinary alumina lining would be consumed far faster.
What purity is supplied?
Technical grade at 99% Cr₂O₃ minimum with moisture at or below 0.5%, micronised. Pigment-grade material with tighter colour tolerance can be quoted where the end use is decorative rather than refractory.
Is chromium oxide the same as hexavalent chromium?
No. Chromium(III) oxide, Cr₂O₃, is the trivalent green oxide supplied here and is not the hexavalent compound subject to restriction. Safety data sheets are issued with every consignment.
