Why use chamotte rather than raw fireclay?
Because raw clay still holds chemically bound water and shrinks violently the first time it is fired. Calcination drives that water off and converts the clay to stable mullite and cristobalite, so chamotte enters a lining already shrunk — which is what keeps the finished brick or castable dimensionally stable in service.
What Al₂O₃ content should I specify?
Content tracks refractoriness: 30–35% suits low and medium duty linings, while 40–45% is specified where service temperature or slag contact is more severe. Iron oxide matters as much as alumina, since Fe₂O₃ forms low-melting phases — keep it at or below 2.5% for anything demanding.
Is it supplied graded or as lump?
Both. Lump suits buyers who crush and grade to their own curve; graded fractions and milled powder are supplied where the plant feeds a mix directly. Tell us the target particle size distribution and we will quote the fractions to match it.
