Datasheets are written to be comparable, which is exactly why they mislead. Two suppliers can report the same four numbers and deliver materials that behave very differently in your furnace. The numbers are not wrong; they simply describe less than most buyers assume.
Chemical analysis is a starting point, not a ranking
A higher Al₂O₃ figure is not automatically a better product. What matters more is the minor constituents: alkalis, iron oxide and silica govern where the first liquid phase forms, and a small change there can move the softening point hundreds of degrees. Read the impurities before you read the headline number.
Bulk density and porosity travel together
These two describe the same structure from opposite directions. High bulk density with high apparent porosity is a contradiction worth questioning. Open porosity is what lets slag and gas into the body, so for corrosion service it is often the more predictive figure of the two.
Cold strength describes handling, not service
Cold crushing strength is measured at room temperature. It tells you whether a brick survives transport, storage and installation, and it is a useful consistency check between deliveries. It says almost nothing about behaviour at 1500 °C, where hot modulus of rupture and creep are the relevant properties — and those appear on far fewer datasheets.
What the sheet does not tell you
The properties that most often decide service life are the ones printed nowhere:
- Corrosion behaviour against your specific slag chemistry, which no general figure can capture.
- Thermal-shock resistance under your actual cycling, as opposed to a standard laboratory cycle.
- Batch-to-batch consistency — the single property a datasheet structurally cannot show, since it reports one batch.
- Installation sensitivity: how much the result depends on water content, mixing and curing on your site.
What to ask for instead
Ask for the analysis certificate of the batch you are actually being offered, not the typical values sheet. Ask for the range rather than the typical figure, because the range is what you will live with. And where the application is corrosion-driven, ask whether the supplier has service data from a comparable slag — an honest answer to that question is worth more than any additional decimal place.
